I was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in Pleasant Hill, a small town in the East Bay Area of California. My childhood interests in gardening and nature started me on a path to attend UC Davis where I received a Bachelor's in Plant Science and a Master's degree in International Agricultural Development. In the early 1980s, I lived in East Africa, working first on a refugee resettlement project in Northeastern Uganda, and then with a program assisting small-scale farmers in the Rift Valley of Kenya. I also taught agriculture and biology at a boys high school in rural Kenya.

In returning to California in 1987, I was hired by UC Davis to help launch a new statewide extension program in sustainable agriculture. During my 21 years with that program, I worked with groups across the U.S. to provide educational programs and resources related to agriculture and the environment. In 1996 I was also appointed California state coordinator for the USDA Western Region SARE program and served in both capacities until my retirement from UC in 2008.  I enjoy collaborating, working as part of a team, and during my tenure at UC Davis developed many innovative educational tools and products, including one of UC Extension's first online courses for pest management professionals.

I'm married to Sarah Chaney, and we have a daughter, Marian, who lives in England. Sarah and I were inspired to move to the Pacific Northwest, and relocated to Corvallis in 2008, and DEC Education Services was established at that time. I have since completed a Master's in Education (2014) from Portland State University, and have worked on a variety of educational projects. Outside of work, I enjoy gardening, swimming, hiking, birdwatching, travel, and listening to different types of music.
